A term taken from the Strategic Board Game of GO – Fuseki is ‘A state of Play’. At the commencement of the game or battle all options are available to each player, when the first move is taken further options become available or are removed.

In order to have the best opportunity of victory the player must not only be aware of the options but also understand how to use them to their best advantage in the overall game. FUSEKI aims to give the student the options and at a later stage progress to the understanding of how they best fit in the strategy of the fight and ultimately of their life style.

Fuseki is not just an eclectic style but also a philosophy which its founder and chief instructor Martin Smith has developed and followed through all of his Martial Arts practice. It now encompasses not only the art of Fuseki but also the traditional martial arts Martin continues to follow such as Shotokan Karate and Shindo Jinen Ryu through the teachings of Kiyoshi Yamazaki and the Japan Karate-Do Ryobu- Kai.
