Martin J Smith PhD
8th Degree Black Belt KBR / WKC / ITC

A Martial Arts Instructor with nearly fifty years experience; over forty years teaching experience; he has an array of qualifications, making him a leading expert in the field of Martial Arts, Personal Safety training and Defensive Tactics for Law Enforcement and Security Staff.

He currently trains in the traditional karate system of Shindo Jinen-Ryu with UK Chief Instructor Simon Oliver and is a member of UK Japan Karate Do Ryobu-Kai under the direction and guidance of Kiyoshi Yamazaki 9th Dan from the USA. In October 2015 he graded and was award his 7th Dan in the traditional karate system by Sensei Yamazaki.

He holds the Shihan grade of 8th Dan Black Belt in the integrated martial arts system of Fuseki, recognised and awarded by the World Karate and Kickboxing Council (WKC) the Kodo Butoku Renmei (Old Way Martial Virtues Federation) and a range of other National and International Associations.

He holds senior Dan Grades in other arts, including Shotokan Karate, the Phillipino art of Eskrima, Combative Kickboxing and the original police self defence system of Taiho Jutsu. Martin is a member and associated to the UK Self Defence Association with Meijin 10th Dan Gary Stringer.

In 1993 he formed the Institute for Traditional Combatives (ITC Martial Arts), with experience gained from personal training with many top British and World class instructors Martin drew together the various arts he had studied to form the FUSEKI Martial Arts System and this system was officially recognised nationally in July 1996.

Martin has been a nationally qualified Personal Safety Trainer and Senior Police Defensive tactics trainer. He is a member of the prestigious International Law Enforcement and Educators Association (ILEETA).

Martin has trained and graded under some of the World’s leading martial artists including: Kiyoshi Yamazaki (Shindo Jinen Ryu) Hirokazu Kanazawa/Shiro Asano (Shotokan Karate), Brain Jones & Abner Pasa (Eskrima), Dan Inosanto & Rick Young (JKD), Brian Eustace (Taiho Jutsu) and Marco Ruas (MAA Ruas Vale Tudo).
